Black History Month (Colchester)

2009 is an important year, while Suffolk and Norfolk are in their 12th and 9th years, and some boroughs of London are celebrating their 22nd year , Essex will see for the first time a county-wide celebration of Black History Month - a dynamic programme of cultural and popular music, discussion, film, dance, art, and festival events throughout the county. Since 1926 when Carter G. Woodson created what we now know as Black History Month - the original one week of the year in Harlem, New York has grown to an an International festival of African and African Caribbean cultural and educational events. Throughout England in October towns, cities and villages people are celebrating the huge contribution that individuals, communities and entire cultures have made to the society here as we know it. Black History Month is internationally an educational and entertainment based event, reaching out and presenting both established and new artists, academics, makers and creators, as well as delivering workshops and discussion groups for learning and participation.
